This piece is created with found recordings of sounds from the road-side and inside the house.

The idea was to create the effect of being suddenly exposed to the blaring traffic. Indian cities are by nature transient and there is an overlap of space (culture, politics et al).

In terms of technique, I have layered the sounds; and played with the pitch and speed. It was produced on Adobe Premier Pro and Soundbooth.

This was made under the guidance of sound artist, David Blamey.

The Eames report for setting up a design education institute in India

The Eames report for setting up a design education institute in India:
The report was the guiding force behind the foundation of National Institute of Design.
USSD is the future of financial inclusion

By Frog’s Executive Strategy Director Ravi Chhatpar, Johannesburg

Although the promise of low-cost smart phones has the potential to fundamentally revolutionize emerging markets, the quotidian reality for many people in Africa, India, China, Southeast Asia, and South America is the simple and functional feature phone.

For most consumers in these markets, the sophistication of mobile interaction is defined by the familiarity with which cumbersome Unstructured Supplementary Service Data, or USSD, codes (keypad commands, e.g. *141*12-digit-number#dial) are used for any service outside of voice and SMS (e.g., adding airtime). For mobile innovators, this is arguably the lowest of the lowest common denominators in technology, but it in fact is the most compelling.

Financial institutions are realizing that attempting to replicate a service borne out of unique and aged local conditions is a losing proposition. For several years, Kenya’s M-Pesa has been touted as the seminal example of emerging-market innovation, but the reality is that it was a brilliant example of being at the right place at the right time, at that perfect intersection of hyper-connectivity (mobile) and non-connectivity (infrastructure) in a country that needed a remittance solution more than anything. It does not neatly translate into other scenarios; it is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and neither should it be. Since M-Pesa’s debut, entrepreneurs and institutions have tried to replicate M-Pesa in many countries over the years and have consistently failed. Real financial services disruption that acknowledges the role of the informal sector, the importance of community, the need for alternative assessments of risk, and the blending of traditional financial product categories is what will define truly meaningful innovation. And all of these will still be delivered through that most simple, basest, crudest of mobile technologies—USSD. In 2013, an aspiring innovator will define success with this approach.

Reflections: This article throws some interesting insights into how exploiting technology into new frontiers can create new experiences. The success of M-Pesa using Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) is striking here. M-Pesa provides simple solution to a complex system of transferring money. Working in under-developed or developing economies is about understanding the context. What worked in its favour was the fact that it did not depend on expensive technology. In India, many such innovations do exist, but often they do not get the financial support to scale up. NGOs here lack the resource to pitch for such projects at the right doors. M-Pesa enjoys support from corporates (though there were some issues, but it was rested soon), government and the public alike.

I am of the belief that a start-up requires three kinds of people: the technologist, the designer and the manager. The technologist would bring the prototypes to life, the designer ensures that the products never forget the people and the manager links the product to the market. Talking of designers, I see hesitation from most start-ups in India to see them as collaborators. They are seen as accessories.

There are misconceptions that a design is only for aesthetics and a hiring a designer is expensive. The point o note here is that the destination of a product is not a factory but someone’s life. While the manager will ensure that the product reaches the customer’s door, it is the insight of a designer that will ensure that it is used and not thrown. So why shouldn’t the product create an emotional value for the person? Design is about understanding the emotions of a person and creating a product that they can share experiences with. It is not about decorating, not giving frills that is unnecessary or creating another junk that will be thrown as your competitor enters your market.

The approach for a user-centered design process is not just about looking at the end product but also ensuring that during the entire iteration, the product is tested. It is ensuring that the focus is never missed and learning that irrespective of what the current market trend dictates, the people for whom you are designing are never left out. It’s in creating values with the people that helps a product sustain in the long run.

So if you find a designer, keep them full time. They can as much help in the decision making as a manager. Keep the doors open for new insights.

We nailed the IAMAI Hackathon competition!

We nailed the IAMAI Hackathon competition!:
It’s an awesome feeling when your work is appreciated. With the challenge of finishing a product within a span of 24 hrs, it was all about working consistently towards a common goal.

More than winning, the learning of how to work as a team was the best thing. I was sharing the table with two engineers, whom I had met just a day before. So starting from building the equation as a team, to dividing the responsibility and planning the application process- it was a working experience into what goes not just in building an app but also how to collaborate (Designers+engineers) with each other. There were times when the product would stop working or the code would just not respond, our appetite would suddenly drop and we would get back to fix to it.

Things that helped though were small gestures like motivating each other, discussing the task even if it is not your job and trying to think together. Even if the work was divided with each teammate, I still feel that we could not have achieved the cohesion had it not been for the fact that all of us trained our eyes towards a focus goal- of delivering a finished product which is easy to use.

I don’t think one can predict the winning part. We did a good job as a team, but there were others as good. On retrospective, I think what worked for us was a clear and effective concept, and focus on creating a finished working model.

My interest is in the process. In other words the steps needed to accomplish a task. I feel each task is nothing but a simple set of ‘actions’. I say action, by which it could even be thoughts which helps us reflect on the previous steps and creates footwork for the next step. In short the basic premise of all the processes are the same.

Coming from an artistic background, it perplexes me when I hear the designer lingo. I am mesmerized to learn about so many methods that are used to implement a design and then there are these conversations and dilemma on how can a designer mesh with an engineer/technical person given the collaborative nature of jobs.

This blog post and many that would follow is all about that-my discovery of what design method is, the similarities with scientific and artistic process, the need, the cons in following such a method, the jargon etc.

These are the later images that focused on the impressions I had...

These are the later images that focused on the impressions I had of the journey. There is marked difference from what I did earlier. It shows a clear distinction in terms of the thought process.

I made a small book with line drawings. the idea was to...

I made a small book with line drawings. the idea was to emphasize on the conversations, the flow of time, the feelings but it didn’t work.

With all the right intention, I ended up creating a document with detailed facts and zero-emotions.

I was too inclined to get a certain kind of illustrations for this that I completely blocked out the essence of the journey from flowing through.

Mind map

Mind map

Story-board

Story-board

The process: reflecting the journey_Mine the city

I had multiple questions when I started this assignment- from the metaphorical meaning of a journey to what I ‘see’ to more mundane questions like how to represent these, the kind of forms that might best reflect the experience etc.

I have gone through multiple stages to reflect on the journey. Herein I will give an account of the process, the pitfalls and the learning. FYI: The process is far from over though, so this is just the first phase. I am currently in the second phase. Will expand on that in a later post. Enjoy!

The day I took the journey, it was an overwhelming experience. There was so much that I saw and felt that it was important to filter it before it could be given a permanent structure.

So the first thing I did was to write. I feel that writing helps me filter the process. Note: Please read the previous two blogs to learn about the journey.

Then a step-by-step story board for the same was drawn.

It was part of the documentation. The process seemed extremely mechanical initially. But on reflection I think it helped me realize what to filter out, secondly helped me notice certain patterns which were my perceptions. I kept emphasizing time as an element. I think it was not time per se but its relation with the space. The use of space is what I will be taking forward from this step.

I made a mind-chart next. The idea was to plot the corresponding spaces and emotions with the images and time. Herein I divided the entire journey into few parts. This helped me concentrate on the parts I needed to work on and what I need not.

I then decided to give shape to the form. I made a small book of illustrations. What I had in mind were the illustrations which I saw once in a library. It had simple black and white illustration of an office scene. I like the handling of the forms, they were confident and narrated a story. It used minimal text and were based on the minute expressions of the characters.

What I did didn’t work though. It was not me. It took me time to do this, yet the illustrations looked like a sketchy version of the original I now realize that I was thinking too hard on what to do than how to do. I ignored the process and directly jumped to the conclusion. What finally emerged was a poor fake of the original image I had in mind. Also these images were not too different from the documentation. As a reader I could not feel the journey the way I wanted to portray.

So I sat with a fresh mind and thought about the ‘experiences’ and tried to stick to what I felt. And voila it worked!

Though this is the first draft, I feel better with the particular output. My next task is to experiment more in terms of mediums, texture and finally the form.

This entire exercise highlighted few important points. First being my dependency on certain mediums. Secondly, I find any kind illustration extremely hard. I feel I lack patience to work on a long narration.

I used the recent studio crit to discuss all these. And I must say, it was extremely beneficial. I will share a separate post on the crit though.

Don’t forget to drop in your comments.

Reflecting on the journey_Mine the City

As I approach the end to my second immersion as part of Mine of the City project, I thought it would be a good time to retrospect my activity. The project started as a consequence to the first immersion, which dealt with exploring a specific area through text.

As a rule we were barred to use all the conventional mediums that we had used in the previous assignment like photography and videography. The idea was to challenge our engagement. It was a struggle to think how to approach the assignment without the conventional forms and made me realize how restricted I had become.

This assignment is called Commute in the city.

My initial destination was from Yelahanka to Benarghatta National Park. So I made the first journey after doing research on what to expect, which bus to take and when would be a better time to visit. I had very specific outlines of what output I wanted even before the trip started. But it did not work out. Lesson learnt. I told myself never do any work with pre-conceived ideas especially when the subject/project I am not attuned to. With the hope of looking for things that I had in mind, I missed out on seeing things that were already present.

This led me to take another trip. And this time the journey was quite adventurous, in the literal sense. I will put the highlights briefly. The journey started at 11 a.m. and ended at 10:30 p.m. The mode of transportation was BMTC. Also I had a daily pass, so that saved me spending extra bucks when I diverted from my route. The first trip between Yelahanka to Majestic was long. The only incident that stuck out was this ‘weird’ (I don’t know what else to term him as) guy who tried touching me. From Majestic, a bus called 365 goes to Benarghatta National Park directly. The frequency is moderate. But I stood at the bus-stand for more than hour and finally gave up. I decided to look for other routes. I took a bus till Mekhri Circle. On asking for directions, due to language issue, I took the bus from the wrong-side. Instead of reaching M.G. Road as planned I was on my way to Yeshwantpur. (Please read the previous post to learn about the journey details.)

I take my concept from this point of the journey as where and how space changes and the experiences associated with it.

It was a struggle to begin with. I never realized that documenting a personal experience could be such a mammoth task. (Read the next post to see the process.)

The final output is in the form illustrations. The process is still on to find a relevant form that will reflect on the content.

How I came to final content will be elaborated in the upcoming posts. What I can say is that at times the easiest could be the most deceiving. Illustrating, as I later find out has not been a cup of tea. I have struggled at every level of this assignment. But I also learnt a lot.

Anyways this apart, I am on my way to work on another project. It would involve extending the research done in the first assignment and creating a new project. Things are still at an early stage. Lot of homework has to done before anything could start. Today in fact I had my first discussion with my project tutor. Few essentials need to be worked out like writing the scope of the project, synopsis, timeline and finding another mentor possibly from my department. This though is just the beginning is also teaching me the importance of planning and approaching a large-scale project. I am sure there will be more to this, so keep checking as I post the experiences from my time at Srishti.

Happenings at Srishti: Part 1

Bangalore has been a new lease of life. I am mesmerized with the evening drizzles, the pleasant weather, a peaceful location, an affectionate PG Aunt and getting introduced to new people.

I had also been looking forward to shift to a new rented accommodation, but it seems to be delayed indefinitely. These are the stuff that happens when you are in a hurry and everything is hoch-poch.

Srishti on the other hand seems to have synchronized most of the stuff.

Coming to introspect my first week here. Things have been pretty mixed. So I am picking up new stuff, dealing with issues which at times seem to have gone beyond my hand and yet trying to keep that enthusiastic face.

For e.g. the house that I am planning to shift to is still a mess. I guess where money there is money involved, it’s always good to be patient and desperation is possibly the worst way to approach anything. Something I didn’t do. Then the adjustments in a PG are the other thing that I am experiencing. With over-flooded sinks, crammed up space and lack of privacy, it’s all turning into experiences that can never be replicated.

The next story unfolds in Srishti. With a huge selection of courses and projects, I was literally swept off my feet, till I heard that our scheduled has already been predefined. My smiley face turned into a sad one. Later after discussions and rounds of negotiations, I settled for a project called ‘Mine the City’. To briefly explain it, it’s an open ended discussion dealing with the various aspects of the city. I am pretty excited to see how it will unfold. So I have my fingers crossed for now. The point being I need to keep myself aware with all the happenings in my department and try to implement all those stuff in the project I am attached as it belongs to a different department. That said, I actually had discussion with the dean to allow me the flexibility that I need. So I dealt with my Prof and then the Dean to create the space that I need to work.

Coming to the point of negotiation, I think I have come to a point where the awareness of oneself and the need to lead is imminent. Realizing how much I am putting into my studies currently, mentally, emotionally, physically, financially etc., I feel it’s a good idea to have a certain idea on what I plan to do. But the challenge remains in letting ourselves open up to new things as well. The process of filtration is possibly the toughest thing to do. It broadly revolves around introspection, dedication and rectification on a regular basis. And all these require the courage to face up to all the mistakes one makes in the process. It sounds theoretical. It’s akin to walking on a thin thread of rope and trying to keep your calm throughout.

Anyways getting back to Srishti, I need to streamline my thought process, be proactive and aware of the environment. There are also the obvious doubts. But then to look at it the other way it’s time we learn to face our own demons and experiment without letting the fear in. After all life is all about learning.

And before I finish the post, let me introduce two new people I met this week. One is Nandeep and the other is Afsana. The first is an engineer and the latter is a media student. Its nice to have friends when you are in a new place.

Pretty excited to see how life infolds in the next two years. What with making new friends, doing stuff as I want to and learning to challenge myself and achieving small and significant goals. As I go doze off, I hope to have my faith intact and face the challenges and be calm.

Happenings at Srishti: Part 7

Journeys cannot be written. True to the saying has been this short trip to and fro one corner of Bangalore to another.

The only thing I consciously avoided was asking the either conductor/driver in the first half of the journey. I didn’t want anyone to notice/question me.

As I sit to write this after returning home from a rather happening journey, I have also to realize few important facts of life. Journeys are always are own. No matter who is the co-passenger, it is our will that makes all the difference. It is our personality that makes them what they end up being finally.

It all started when I slept off in the bus for a short while. Instead of getting down after realizing my mistake, I decided to use it as an opportunity to document the commute for my current assignment. It is called commute in the city. I asked my co-passenger where would the bus stall finally, to which she said ‘Yashwantpur’. Language was a barrier. So I asked twice. I knew that the depot is very well connected to other areas in Bangalore. So I did not bother getting down and remained on the bus. As the bus left the depot, I did not know that it didn’t take a U-turn, but went straight on Tumkur highway. It is NH-4 and connects Bangalore to Bombay. Everywhere on the way I could see signage showing that our path leads to Bombay. I found it weird, but was ought to I realize that I had left Bangalore long back.

All the while I was staring outside, I saw construction happening at frantic pace. It was almost a competition on who could be taller. The buildings, the metro, and the flyovers everything seemed to be running for the race. It reminded me of Gurgaon, a place on the border of Delhi which has familiar characteristics. I marveled at the engineering capacity. I looked into the minute details of how a bridge is made. I questioned what height is a good height for anyone to stay. Because everyday each new construction is only getting higher and higher. What and how can we define as the new horizon?

As the bus travelled further, I suddenly realized that the metro pillars were gone. I found it strange, yet oblivion to the fact that I am in the wrong direction. With the sun setting, wide roads, window seat, I could only remember my thoughts and memories from before. It was refreshing to look outside at the never-ending road, into a new horizon.

Finally I reached a place called Nelamangala. The signage at the entrance said welcome to the Town of Nelamangala. Looking outside, suddenly it seemed as if I had reached my grandfather’s town. Small, chaotic, less private vehicle, hap-hazard planning, crowded roads, small vendors are few of things that are similar between Burdwan and this new place. What shocked me was when the bus docked inside the depot and the conductor announced that the bus is not going anywhere, meaning it will not go back.

Now the twist to the story is that my phone had died down, I was without any drinking water and as a back-up, I had an old phone which can only be used for messaging.

I inquired at the depot office, spoke to a lady and asked a couple to see if any other bus would go to Bangalore. Everyone pointed out that only G-8 goes. It is the same bus I came in. I was a little tensed now. It was already 7 in the evening, and to reach home I had to get into a bus for my final destination maximum by 9.

Thankfully another bus came called 258c. It was going to Majestic. I now knew that at least I will reach Bangalore. It was 7 p.m. now. As I sat on the bus I heaved a sigh of relief. But the route was not without traffic. Being a highway, it had heavy traffic even in the evening, buses and lorry had filled up the entire stretch. There was traffic plus construction had made the flow of vehicles tough. As I sat, I calculated my chances of getting home. As a back-up option, I had decided to spend the night at Central if nothing better happens.

The bus finally reached the Central station but was still some distance away from the bus stand. As I waited patiently, I realized the bus had not moved more than few feet in a span of 25 minutes. I got down and started to walk. Looking at the long queue of buss in the 1 km stretch, I was puzzled to what must have happened for such a jam. I discovered that buses which were off duty had been parked at the entrance causing the massive jam.

So I finally had reached half way to my home. I grabbed an orange juice and looked for a bus going in the direction of my place. I got into a bus which was unfortunately empty and was headed for the depot. I got down and ran back to the platform and found another bus, I jumped in literally. It’s a new feeling and nice to know that I was finally on my way home. With a journey spanning 5.5 hours, with sprinkle of excitement, agony, nostalgia, I could not have found a better excuse to reflect on myself.

The journey made me realize that I am all alone, both physically and emotionally. All this while I was in Bangalore, I was struggling to acquaint myself with the new place. Almost every now and then I would stare at the phone and hope it will ring. But now I could not stop smiling. Deep inside I knew that this journey came as a lesson, also hinting at the time to come. Every road remains for us to travel. It is our initiative and attitude that finally brings in the different perspectives. I was no more thinking about missing people and it did not bother me that I was in an unknown territory. I was learning to move, walk, fall and run and be patient and calm during adversary.

Though there was excitement in the onwards journey, it was tension that held my breath in the return journey. To congratulate myself, I treated myself to milk and ice-cream.

As I finally rang up my parents to assure that all was well, I was grinning to myself knowing that I have without knowing had stepped into a territory which I was scared of earlier- of being alone completely. It was good to be back home but it was better to know that I have learnt something even deeper as a person. As for the assignment, I think I have enough fodder to write. What remains to be seen is how I will get all these experiences and reflection together.

There are several ideas. One could be in the form of a painting where the painting resembles an image from Salvador’s Clock. The other could be making a accordion book which would flip out into a map. I think I will now start writing the entire experience into a paper. Let’s see what the final outcome will be.

Happenings at Srishti: Part 6

Beyond the assignment, that I earlier mentioned, it was the workshop with Anna Fox that kept me occupied.

I will tell you briefly what the workshop was all about.Starting from how one handles a camera, to the subject he/she chooses to the selection and then compilation and finally publishing- the workshop was a summary of all of these processes.

What she has managed to initiate us is to look at how photographers work and how to finish a project. Starting from looking through the lens to analyzing and sorting, then weaving a narrative to finally getting them printed. Looking at her enthusiasm she would have got us to do an exhibition and funding for a large scale project had it not been for the time crunch.

Personally I had stopped photography 2 years back when my camera stopped working. Looking back at it now, I think it has helped me get over the phase where the compositions were very regular with the same angle and no thought. I was focusing more on the visual aspect, which I think is in a way good. But after picking up the aesthetics, it is also essential to think about the content and its relation to us. I was earlier more interested in colours and a certain way of looking at things. Also I never really worked hard enough to go beyond the obvious, meaning I use to visit the Old Delhi only as it offered me people who are used to being photographed.

For the first time I have actually started to ask people before shooting them. I think it is ethical given the fact that these people might never even get to see their own photographs again. So before taking a shot I ask for their permission and after a shot I choose to show them. But what I am interested is to see them in their environment. And I am sure that there would be so many other ways to explore, so I can’t wait to grab my camera and go.

Coming to my take on doing photography, I think it has certain advantage that no other medium offers. It is spontaneous. Even the idea of staging has some degree of spontaneity. My interest still lies in interaction design which involves lot of other mediums, and photography might be something that will help me in my practice as well.

At least to the extent I have explored, it has brought certain subjects, its relation to the surrounding and a way to look and ponder at. With naked eyes we often tend to miss out the details. So even if we look from different angles, we don’t question what is it we are ‘seeing’ and why. Camera acts as a space that lets us the time to delve.

The next best thing was assisting Anna.

Photo

The Rambler's Voice © Paulami Roy Choudhury

The Rambler's Voice © Paulami Roy Choudhury

The Rambler's Voice © Paulami Roy Choudhury

Happenings at Srishti: Part 5

The first assignment of this semester just got over. Called Mine the City, I delved into the place called Basavanagudi. Lying South of Bangalore, this is the place which has a history even before Bangalore began a city. But one look at it now and you may mistake it for any other place. Modern buildings and same ubiquitous markets surround the place. The place built around the temples. They attract tourist from world over. But beyond that nothing is here looks really that old.

Now let me tell you the brief. We needed to express the essence of the place by using text.

Text, now what is it? Is it a typeface, the words, the sentence…?

So after pondering over it and reading few books, this is what I found… ‘A book or other written or printed work, regarded in terms of its content rather than its physical form’.

But I had another step to finish, before starting to work on the assignment-The Big Idea.

The challenge was to embrace the place, feel it and then relook at it. To do anything about the area, I had to think what is it that could be done that would bring forth the place values and character. So I started to explore from various perspectives.

For the longest time I was unable to associate anything with history to this place. The only thing which made sense was the temple and its various versions of mythology. But that didn’t solve the purpose either. I am not religious, so even the idea of using the temple was a big ‘no’.

So I scraped through books, interviewed people, went goggling till I found someone called DV Gundappa.

Who is he? He is a Kannadiga poet, whose works and thoughts are extremely revered. But I didn’t know what to do with this bit of information. I am not even interested in poetry, which is something he excelled at.

And then the idea struck.

I went back to the poems of DVG, the interviews, the images and my initial jottings. After that it was matter of one walk across the flower market, the taste of the crunchy dosas and then hearing the gossips of the people around led me to a prose from Gundappa’s poetry book, called Nivedana.

I chose this place called DVG Road. The poem is called the ‘traveller’s guide’. It’s a beautiful, ethereal poem dealing with the concept of life, time and thoughts. It was love at first sight for me.

For my assignment, I used chalk to write the text on the main road and then recorded over time the disappearance of the text as natural and human actions took precedence.

I would love to hear the comments that everyone has.

On retrospective, if I had got more time, I would surely have scrapped the idea in the first place itself. Not that this is bad or something but I find it run of the mill kind. It needs to be pointed out that the assignment was to be of a very short duration, so it was not feasible to ponder over it for too long.

It had certain elements that got me attracted to it in the first place, like the element of time, space, interactivity. But on another level it’s too simple. In my words, a work which has strength and credibility would be relevant throughout time even if it fades out from our memory.

So that was all about the assignment.

Other than that the last few weeks had been so hectic that I had almost stopped jotting. My parents were here for a week, so whatever time I could spare, I spent with them. I don’t think Dad will be back anytime soon. So no regrets about that but the fact is that now I have a huge list of pending work which seems like a mammoth task to get over.

As I resume my work, I realize how wonderful my current project has been. Not only have I got to meet few really good professionals but also managed to resume certain interest which lied dormant previously. Check my next post to learn what is keeping me busy other than this project.
